The Village Birders Club

Bird walk report - Ponce Inlet

Date: Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008

Great to get to the Atlantic Ocean again with 47 species seen, and the weatherman warmed things up for us.  Once again a great day of birding but missing all the ducks seen on the Halifax river last year.  This trip delivered a first for the club as amongst the swarm of birds diving around the fishing boat at sea was a Pomarine Jaeger.  The Purple Sandpiper was a no show.  Also a gull that has been questioned, sorry no picture was taken.  I I.D.ed it as a Lesser Black-backed Gull but John Affleck thinks it was a California Gull as he is certain that the gull had a black spot on the end of it's bill, both gulls are the same size.  I did not see this and this bird was darker gray than the California.  I don't know if a California Gull has ever been seen in Florida, I will have to do my homework, but at this time my call is the Lesser Black-backed Gull.  I would sure like John to be right as this would bring in birders from all over the country.  But with out a picture we are at a stand still unless another birder see's it and posts it on the web site.  If there is a correction I will send it out to all.  How fun is this!
