Bird walk report - Hontoon Island State Park

Even though the weather report was stormy we were spared any bad weather and our walk produced 39 species at Hontoon with the clubs first Northern Parula of the spring. We interrupted some wild turkeys taking a sand bath and watched a great blue heron, on it's nest, consume a snake. Following our walk at Hontoon many of us continued on for pancakes at Deleon Springs State Park where we added 6 more species.


Birds Seen Hontoon:
Wild Turkey, Double-Crested Cormorant, Anhinga, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron, White Ibis, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Ring-Billed Gull, Mourning Dove, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Downy Woodpecker, E. Phoebe, White-Eyed Vireo, American Crow, Fish Crow, Tree Swallow, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Blue-Gray-Gnatcatcher, Gray Catbird, N. Mockingbird, N. Parula, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Black-And-White Warbler, N. Cardinal, Red-Winged Blackbird, Boat-Tailed Grackle And American Goldfinch

Birds Heard Hontoon:
Carolina Chickadee, Blue Jay And Cedar Waxwing.

Birds Seen DeLeon Springs:
Cattle Egret, Green Heron, Black-Crowned Night-Heron, American Bittern And Common Moorhen.

Friday, March 9, Bear Head Trail (a new venue for the club), meet in Belk's parking lot 7:15 AM and plan on a half day. Restroom facilities available at trail head and picnic tables there if you are so inclined. See you Friday!

The first swallow-tailed kite of the season was spotted yesterday by Paul and Patsy Nistico near 466 & 301 so keep looking up!
