Bird walk report - Homosassa Springs

Date: Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006

A rainy start to our day at Homosassa Springs for the 12 who showed up for this walk, but after a cup of coffee in the visitors center out came the sun and we had a great day. This is always a nice place for folks to see native birds and animals of Florida. There were not a lot of feathered visitors and it is always hard to determine who's visiting among the ducks. We did see a nice flock of American Redstarts and a great Yellow-bellied Sapsucker just past the aquarium. After Homosassa Springs my car of folks drove north to 44 and headed out to the Gulf, a beautiful drive and 23 additional species.

Birds Seen Homosassa:
Black-Bellied Whistling-Duck, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Wood Duck, Double-Crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture,Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Pileated Woodpecker, American Crow, Fish Crow, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, Black And White Warbler And American Redstart.

This is one of our favorite trips and last years fall trip produced 54 species as we visit inland coastal, the gulf of Mexico and Suwannee NWR with lot's of tidal flats. Bring snacks and water, this is a full day and we will meet for lunch in Cedar Key. Spotting scopes are a plus on this trip!
