Bird walk report -Bolan Bluff at Paynes Prairie Preserve

Date: Thursday, Oct 16, 2008

A foggy morn with dripping foliage that made you look for birds where they weren't. We had to dodge many a Golden-Silk Spider with it's 3 foot web that hung across the trail. But the birds were great and so was the lunch in quant little Micanopy. Today's species totaled 40 with flocks of Chimney Swift's coming through and Indigo Buntings in numbers also on their way south. We were treated to 5 Yellow-billed Cuckoos, the most I've seen at one time.

Field trip tips and courtesy reminder:

It is customary to share gas expense with your driver.

Be quiet and listen. Bird calls and songs are important in locating and identifying birds.

Stay behind the leader always! (They know where they are going). By the same token, don't lag too far behind, you'll miss things.

Learn the clock method of pointing out birds in trees. It also helps to be able to distinguish one type of tree from another.
